Reuters: TikTok is splitting its algorithm code to appease the US

TikTok is preparing a second version of its algorithm code for its 170 million users in the United States, reports Reuters. According to multiple sources who spoke to the agency, the work on splitting the code began late last year, predating the Congress-approved bill that wants ByteDance to sell its business in the United States or be banned from the country. The social media owner initially declined to comment, but later, a statement was posted on X, saying the story was “misleading and factually inaccurate” without providing further info on what exactly is inaccurate. The report...

Xreal unveils Android-powered Beam Pro with 3D cameras

They have no processing power on board, instead they are driven by a smartphone over USB-C (or a computer). Alternatively, you could plug in the Beam to provide power and handle wireless video casting. The Xreal Beam Pro is so much more. It runs “nebulaOS”, which is Android 14 tuned for AR...

Huawei is the new king of foldable sales, dethroning Samsung

Huawei sold the most foldable smartphones in the first quarter of this year (from January to March), according to a new report released by Counterpoint Research. This is a pretty shocking revelation considering how insignificant Huawei's sales have been in most parts of the world for the past few years, ever since the US government decided to cut its access to Google services. Most people we assume think about Samsung when asked about foldables, but despite that, the Korean company only managed to hit the No.2 spot in the same period of time. What's more, Samsung's sales of foldables...

Geekbench score shows that European Galaxy Z Fold6 units will use the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 too

We’ve seen a couple of benchmark results from the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6 so far with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 at the helm – not surprising, since that was the US model (SM-F956U). The Geekbench database now contains a test result from a European unit (SM-F956B) too and it’s still using the Snapdragon. Leaks have suggested that the cheaper Galaxy Z Fold FE will use a mix of Snapdragon and Exynos chips. A report by The Elec claimed that the flagship Galaxy Z Fold6 version will only use the Snapdragon globally - and now there is proof of that, thanks to Geekbench. Galaxy Z Fold6...

First evidence that the Tensor G5 will be fabbed by TSMC uncovered

All Tensor chipsets so far and the upcoming Tensor G4 have been based on Exynos chips and fabbed by Samsung. But Google has been working on an in-house design and will reportedly move away from Samsung’s foundries. A trading record provides the first proof that the Tensor G5 will be fabbed by TSMC instead. The G5 will be used in the Pixel 10 series in late 2025, if all goes well. This information was discovered by Android Authority, who created this handy chart to explain all the abbreviations: This is the where the information comes from, shipping details for G5 chips for testing....

Rumor: premium Samsung Galaxy Watch X will be unveiled in late June with better battery life

We’ve been hearing rumors the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Watch7 series will feature three versions with a new premium tier dubbed “Ultra”. But that might not be the branding that Samsung has settled on – the premium watch might be called “Samsung Galaxy Watch X” instead. That’s not all – the watch will compete head-to-head with the Apple Watch Ultra series (maybe that’s why Samsung wanted to move away from the “Watch7 Ultra” name) and diving will be a key factor. The Galaxy Watch X will reportedly be water resistant up to 100m (330ft), which is the same water resistance rating as the Apple...

OnePlus 13, Oppo Find X8, and Realme GT6 Pro to get 6,000 mAh batteries

According to a new rumor out of China, OnePlus, Oppo, and Realme will all fit their next flagship devices with 6,000 mAh batteries. For a very long time 5,000 mAh has been the de facto standard, but recently we've seen some models going up to 5,400 mAh or 5,500 mAh, and it seems like the trend is set to continue later this year. That's when the OnePlus 13, the Oppo Find X8, and the Realme GT6 Pro will launch, all sporting 6,000 mAh cells, if this rumor turns out to be accurate. This move might increase each phone's weight, so, as they say, you win some (longevity), you lose some...

Weekly poll results: the Xperia 1 VI is promising but pricey, Xperia 10 VI gets the cold shoulder

Sony has always had a reputation for high quality but expensive products – and that is an apt description of the Xperia 1 VI, judging by the results and comments for last week’s poll. The poll also gauged interest in the Xperia 10 VI mid-ranger, but let’s start with the good news first... sorry, spoilers. Half of voters are interested in the Mark 6 flagship. The unique camera setup drew attention and so did the much-improved battery life. Speaking of, that was helped by the lower resolution of the display, but that caused arguments – is 1080p+ enough for a flagship? Did 4K ever make sense...

Canalys Smartphone market in Southeast Asia sees 12% growth in Q1 2024

Canalys' latest market report on the Southeast Asian smartphone market shows a healthy 12% growth year-on-year in the first quarter of this year. Analysts say it's the first sign of recovery after a rather difficult 2023. Smartphone manufacturers shipped 23.5 million units, but they are still below pre-2023 levels. One of the main driving forces of the Q1 success is Ramdan in some markets like Indonesia and Malaysia, while other companies like Transsion benefited from markets like Philippines and Indonesia where the sub-$100 segments saw a revival. In any case, Samsung is still in...

HMD Aura stealthily goes on sale in Australia as a cheaper alternative to the Pulse

This is as big a surprise for us as it must be for HMD – the company’s latest phone is now on sale by Australian retailer JB Hi-Fi. It’s called the HMD Aura and it is similar to the HMD Pulse, except that it is cheaper than it. There is no information about it on HMD.com, though, at least not yet. The Aura has a 6.56” display and though it runs at only 60Hz, it has a higher resolution of 900 x 1,600px (vs. 720 x 1,612px on the Pulse). No fancy punch hole here, though, instead it uses a notch for the 5MP selfie camera. The rear camera is pretty basic too with a 13MP main module and a...

Galaxy Z Fold6 and Z Flip6 to employ only Snapdragon, more case renders surface

According to a source close that spoke to Korean publication TheElec, Samsung is once again betting on a single-chip strategy for its upcoming foldables, the Galaxy Z Fold6 and Z Flip6. This report refutes earlier leaks suggesting Samsung is finally implementing the dual-chip strategy with its foldable handsets. However, it is quick to point out that the decision to go for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip instead of mixing it with the Exynos 2400 has nothing to do with performance concerns, and it has everything to do with cost-effectiveness. Developing a device using two different...

Apple is challenging the €1.8 billion antitrust fine related to a Spotify complaint

This March Apple was hit with a massive €1.8 billion fine ($2B) over a complaint initially filed by Spotify back in 2019. The complaint was simple – Apple is charging app makers a 30% tax when a user subscribes to their service for a year and 15% for subsequent years. That gave an unfair advantage to Apple Music over Spotify as the latter was forced to raise subscription costs to cover the tax. Apple isn’t going to just pay up, though. Bloomberg reports that Apple has filed its own suit with the EU’s General Court in Luxembourg to try and overturn the hefty fine. Apple suggests that the...

The Pixel 8a is supposed to last you (at least) seven yeas with Google providing software support but also ensuring that replacement parts are still available even in the early 2030s. But if you had to repair one yourself, how hard would it be? Pixel 8a and Pixel 8 with their batteries out Well, the plastic back cover comes off easily enough and you don’t even need to do that if you just want to replace the protective glass above the cameras. Then there are some Torx screws in the way, but after that PBKreview encountered an issue. And it’s a typical one – despite having a pull...

Redmi Pad Pro in for review

This is the Redmi Pad Pro and it's a big-screen tablet at an affordable price (starting from around $250). It ships with a single accessory - a USB-A to USB-C cable, but you can opt to equip it with a number of official accessories. The first is the Redmi Pad Pro Cover - a simple but rugged cover that can stand the tablet up in landscape mode. It's not as clever as the Pro Cover for the Xiaomi Pad 6S Pro 12.4, but it does the job. Then there's the Redmi Pad Pro Keyboard, which has a robust and tactile keyboard that truly elevates the Redmi Pad Pro for multitasking. If...

The iPhone SE 4 to bring a price hike

According to a tipster on X, the iPhone SE 4 will be priced slightly higher than its predecessor, but Apple will aim for a price tag below $499. For context, the previous affordable iPhone started at $429. Keep in mind that we don't have solid evidence to back the new rumor, but if true, the US iPhone SE 4's price could go up 10%, getting close to $470. And if all goes to plan, the device will debut sometime in 2025. Perhaps using a more modern iPhone 14-inspired design and the inclusion of Face ID will justify the price hike. We can't know for sure, but it's been a long time since...

Ultrahuman Ring Air review

We’ve reviewed our fair share of smart wearables here at GSMArena but the ring form factor has evaded us until now. Ultrahuman is a young company aiming to establish itself in the smart ring market and Ring Air is its latest product. This is the lightest smart ring on the market and it promises to deliver the health and activity tracking you'd normally get in a smartwatch but in a form factor that's far less obtrusive, while still offering multi-day battery life. Fitting most of the sensors from a smartwatch inside a ring with a diameter of just 8.1mm is an impressive engineering...
